Kent's Corner

By Kent E. Durbin

This is one of the hardest periods of the year for me.  Employees take vacations and I am here looking at empty chairs.  This gives me time to keep current with the Total Soil Management® program.  I keep current by taking a random recommendation and I justify all the figures.  This may seem like a simple task, but I tell you that it is not.

The Total Soil Management® programs are not like they were when I designed them. We have over 20 years of testing, improving, and making changes to meet specific needs.  With all these improvements, I have to keep on top of it.  I do this by justifying a random recommendation each year.

The Total Soil Management® program is a very comprehensive analysis of your soil fertility.  A couple of companies over the past 20 years have tried to figure it out just to fail.  I got a call several years ago from one of our dealers saying that there was a "look-a-like" program out there.  They wanted to know what to do.  I told them to put out a plot using the "look-a-like" program alongside our program and see if they are, in fact, the same.  We won hands down.

Many companies think the secret to our success is the micronutrients.  I hope they continue to think this.  The micronutrients we use are specially formulated to meet the needs of the Total Soil Management® program and they do a tremendous job.  But the fact is that when we compare our Total Soil Management® program with micronutrients (we call it the "TSM® program") and our Total Soil Management® without the micronutrients (we call this the "Head Start program") against university programs, both of our programs out-yield the university programs.  If you would like to see this data that we have accumulated over the past years call Randy Simonson here at the Catlin office. (800-626-3806)

When all is said and done the Total Soil Management® programs (both of them) out yield all others over 89% of the time.  The very best soil fertility program anywhere (bar none) has to be the "TSM®" program (Total Soil Management® with the micronutrients).

We will be asking for you to hold some PIT BOSS meetings come 30 to 60 days.  The Chem-A-Co people are putting together a meeting presentation that you will want your livestock people to see and hear.
